We are HUGE Harry Potter fans, folks! This is the series that made my son a prolific reader. Seriously, it will always have a special place in our hearts.

Why yes, we do own Hogwarts robes and two Sorting Hats.

I knitted a scarf for my son years ago in his favorite Gryffindor colors because he was so obsessed. I love that the kiddos pulled out ALL their themed garb for our Harry Potter chalk pastels with Nana! They had been looking forward to this teatime for weeks!

Did you know you can also print out your own Sorting Hat Fortune Teller and sort your kiddos into their Hogwarts houses before starting your Harry Potter teatime art?

Harry Potter Homeschool Teatime Treats

My kiddos know that chalk pastel teatime means yummy treats! The biggest hit of our Hogwarts teatime was the homemade Butterbeer. You can scroll down to the very bottom of this post to see my recipe.

I ordered chocolate frogs, gummy slugs, and Bertie Botts every flavor beans off the internet.

Fun Harry Potter Chalk Pastel Teatime

My daughter said she got an ear wax flavored jellybean during our teatime, ha!

Fun Harry Potter Chalk Pastel Teatime

We made Hagrid’s “Happee Brthdae Harry” cake the night before our teatime. It was just a plain yellow cake with pink frosting and green lettering.

Fun Harry Potter Chalk Pastel Teatime

We made brownies and then decorated them with frosting and edible googly eyes to look like mini “Monster Book of Monsters.” A piece of red twizzle made a great tongue.

Green Twizzlers pulled apart and then knotted back together made excellent “Gillyweed!”

Fun Harry Potter Chalk Pastel Teatime

We also made “Acid Pops” which were really Dum Dum’s dipped in honey and then rolled in crushed Dum Dum’s. Pop rocks would have been even better, but we couldn’t find any.

Easy Harry Potter Chalk Pastel Art Lessons for Your Homeschool

No chalk pastel teatime is complete without amazing video art lessons! Nana did not disappoint with this Chalk Pastels at The Movies Harry Potter art marathon. Nana also has a companion Fairy Tales and Mythical Creatures course for You ARE an ARTiST Clubhouse members!

Fun Harry Potter Chalk Pastel Teatime

Nana did a fabulous job of showing us how to easily create our own:

  • Harry Potter’s Lightning Scar
  • Wizard’s Wand
  • Sorting Hat
  • Golden Snitch
  • Hogwarts Great Hall
  • Harry Potter Firebolt Broom

My daughter’s favorite lesson was the Sorting Hat, which she made into a Lady Hat. She also enjoyed turning the Firebolt Broom lesson into Hermione and Crookshanks flying on a broom. Why did she take creative liberties with Nana’s lesson?

Because Nana always reminds her that SHE IS THE ARTIST!

I just love how sweet and encouraging Nana is throughout all the art lessons.

My son’s favorite lesson was Harry Potter’s Lightning Scar and the Golden Snitch.

Tasty Harry Potter Butterbeer Recipe

Want to try our Butterbeer recipe? There are loads of Butterbeer recipes all across the internet. However, I’ve found that most of them are far too sweet and rich to be enjoyable. So, I came up with our own version that my kiddos love! This recipe made 2 HUGE frosty mugs full of “Butterbeer!”

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups vanilla ice cream
  • 2 cups cream soda ice cubes
  • 3 teaspoons imitation butter extract
  • 1 teaspoon rum extract
  • 6 tablespoons butterscotch topping
  • 2 cups cream soda
  • 2 pinches of salt
  • whipped cream

Instructions:

  1. Pour cream soda into ice cube trays and freeze.
  2. Once the cream soda is frozen, place the ice cubes in the blender.
  3. Add ice cream, imitation butter extract, rum extract, 2 cups of cream soda, butterscotch topping, salt, and blend until smooth.
  4. Pour into your favorite frosted mug.
  5. Add whipped cream and drizzle with butterscotch topping.

ENJOY!

Here we go, go, go, go on a chalk pastel art adventure! Oh yes, Dr. Seuss makes for a whimsical teatime. Teatime art lessons are such a fun way to highlight a favorite book or read aloud.

My daughter has been really enjoying her Dr. Seuss books lately, so I was thrilled when I saw that Nana had video art lessons for the Cat in the Hat and Truffula Trees!

Dr. Seuss Art with Chalk Pastels

Chalk pastels are a great way to supplement learning. If your kids are studying something, then Nana probably has an art video to go along with it! Are you children studying birds? The Cat in the Hat

We started our Dr. Seuss art with the famous Cat in the Hat! Nana showed us step-by-step how to draw this entertaining creature. Just don’t let him make any huge messes…unless he’s going to clean them up!

Dr. Seuss Art with Chalk Pastels

Truffala Trees

Oh, the lovely Truffala Trees from “The Lorax!” Aren’t they so beautiful swaying in the breeze? We really had fun with the different colors and swirls of these famous trees.

The Perfect St. Patrick’s Day Unit Study With Art

St. Patrick's Day unit study

St. Patrick’s Day is a fantastic learning opportunity in our homeschools, and unfortunately, it can easily get overlooked. But we can’t let you miss out on all of the fun. We have the perfect St. Patrick’s Day unit study ideas to share with you so that you can have a great time learning together in your homeschool.

St. Patrick’s Day is full of educational goodness, and it’s so much fun to celebrate with kids. We can’t wait to share all of these ideas with you.

We have the perfect way to celebrate St. Patrick's Day in your homeschool! Art, unit study ideas, and more! #homeschool #stpatricks #stpatricksday #stpatricksdayforkids #homeschoolart

First, a quick overview of St. Patrick’s Day so you can share it with your children. We celebrate St. Patrick’s Day every year on March 17th. St. Patrick’s Day is a cultural and religious holiday observed on the anniversary of Saint Patrick’s death.

The day celebrates Ireland’s patron saint and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland, in addition to celebrating Irish culture. St. Patrick was a Roman-British Christian missionary who was kidnapped and taken to Gaelic Ireland, where he was a shepherd for six years. During those six years, St. Patrick found God and left for home. He became a priest and dedicated his life to evangelizing and converting people to Christianity.

Legends state that Saint Patrick used the three-leaved shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity to Irish pagans. So as you can see, St. Patrick’s Day is full of fascinating history to explore. In addition to exploring St. Patrick’s Day’s history, there is poetry, literature, culture, nature, Christianity, and of course – art!

You can’t celebrate without art! Art is essential to having fun in your homeschool. So, without further ado, here are some ideas to help you celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.

Celebrate With These St. Patrick’s Day Homeschool Unit Study Ideas

Tea Time & Treats

We love combining art and tea here at You ARE An Artist. The combination of art and tea time sets a sweet tone in your homeschool where the kids can learn and relax together.

Your children are excited to learn and create with you, and the hands-on aspect of art helps them retain information well. So tea time is the perfect time to read aloud, share poetry, and create art!

Complementary St. Patrick’s Day Irish Blessing Download

We have the perfect Irish Blessing to share with you for this too. Receive your complementary Irish Blessing download by subscribing at the bottom on the website, below, under Art for All Ages since 2010! You can drink tea (or your favorite drinks) while reading this lovely blessing aloud. It always helps to have special treats at tea time also. Three or four-leaf clover sugar cookies would be exciting or something green. Have fun with it, but don’t stress. A box of store-bought cookies is just as good. What counts is the time spent together.

If your kids don’t like tea, you could tint their milk green or have mint chocolate chip ice cream. There are so many creative ways to make it enjoyable. We decided on mint green ice cream with some festive toppings for the younger ones.

St. Patrick’s Day Unit Study Ideas Paired With Homeschool Art

Our favorite art projects for a day or afternoon spent learning about St. Patrick’s Day are shamrocks, of course! Now, remember I told you there is so much to learn and make St. Patrick’s Day educational? Here is another idea. Before or after you do this art lesson, look up with your kids how all shamrocks are clovers, but not all clovers are shamrocks.

Another fantastic art project to incorporate into this lesson is the Cliffs of Moher Ireland. Yes, it’s a part of our World Landmark Series and definitely educational. You and your children would have a great time looking up one of Ireland’s most famous landmarks and then drawing it with chalk pastels. Here is a link full of information about the Cliffs of Moher Ireland and a virtual tour!

St. Patrick's Day unit study

Don’t forget about rainbows, and they are perfect for all ages to draw so your younger children can join in on this one too. We have an art tutorial with a rainbow and a pot of gold in vibrant colors just waiting to be created! You kids are sure to get excited about that. If you want to make it extra educational, just look up how rainbows are made.

Spring is in the air this month, and I should mention, along with the Shamrock and Rainbow art lessons, the Spring Art Course also includes:

  • Swing
  • Jonquil in a glass of water
  • Spring tree
  • Spring tree reflection
  • Rain
  • Quilt
  • Bird’s Nest

Next, our British Isles Map art lesson would pair perfectly for this tea time. Add all of your favorite St. Patrick’s Day books and blessings and draw a map together. Your elementary and up students will enjoy drawing a colorful map of Great Britain, Scotland, and Ireland as you incorporate geography into your St. Patrick’s Day lesson.

All of these art lessons that I have mentioned in this post are available with a Complete Clubhouse Membership. I recommend the complete membership so that your whole family can enjoy everything You ARE An Artist has to offer. With the complete membership, you can easily plan art into every homeschool day, week, or month. The Complete Clubhouse Membership is the perfect match for homeschooling!

It is super quick: Easter Palm Branch

Day 2 – Rainbow Cross – This is such a beautiful lesson to enjoy with ALL the colors. Enjoy Nana’s video art lesson she shared as part of Unit Studies by Amanda Bennett’s Easter Co-Op. Day 4 – Hand Print Easter Lamb – find this step-by-step lesson on our sister site, Hodgepodge. Nana says, “I absolutely love any craft that makes use of children’s handprints. They are an enduring testimony of the child’s growth over the years. Almost every mother and grandmother would treasure a gift of a handprint. I still carry a laminated handprint that my son made for me over 30 years ago, tucked into my Bible!”

Day 5 – Easter Cross with lilies. Find this in the video art lesson, from Day 2, above. A beautiful cross surrounded by lilies plus an Easter rainbow cross art lesson in chalk pastels. • A note on chalk pastels: Pastels are an easy, forgiving medium. Fun for children and adults alike! Details on the pastels and paper we use, how and where to purchase, and links to all of Nana’s other pastel lessons are here: Our Favorite Chalk Pastels
  • The practical aspects of a mess: Pastels are blessedly messy. We always have baby wipes close by to wipe hands. We wear something we don’t mind getting stained or don a smock.
